Dr. Stan Blade was appointed a Dean of the Faculty of Agriculture, Life and Environmental Sciences at the University of Alberta in 2014.

In this role, he is responsible for the leadership and administration of all aspects of the Faculty. Dr. Blade is also a full professor in the Faculty’s Department of Agriculture, Food and Nutritional Science.

Dr. Blade is a board member of Livestock Gentec (livestock genomics), Phytola (oilseed genomics), the Alberta Biodiversity Monitoring Institute, Genome Alberta, Biological Greenhouse Gas Management Program and the Alberta Rural Development Network.

Prior to his appointment at the University of Alberta, Dr. Blade was the founding Chief Executive Officer of the Alberta Innovates Bio Solutions Corporation from 2008 to 2014. As CEO, he had responsibility for a $98 million portfolio with a total investment value of $250 million. Dr. Blade led a team of professionals with extensive content expertise in agriculture, food, bioindustrial refining, ecological goods & services and prions.

Previously, Dr. Blade worked as the Executive Director of the Alberta Agricultural Research Institute with the Government of Alberta, from 2006 to 2009. This faction was responsible for ensuring that agricultural research, development and deployment deliver innovative solutions to the marketplace.

Dr. Blade also served as the Deputy Director General (Research) for the International Institute of Tropical Agriculture from 2003 to 2006. There, he was responsible for the strategic direction of the Institute including over 150 international research scientists and 1200 national staff located at seven research stations and 16 countries in Africa.

Dr. Blade has published over 90 research articles, ten book chapters, over 170 conference abstracts and has edited four books. He has been the winner of several awards from the American Society of Agronomy and the Crop Science Society of America.

Dr. Blade’s expertise has been recognized through his invitations to participate in research reviews conducted by the European Union, Consultative Group on International Agricultural Research, Food and Agriculture Organization, Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council and the Canadian Foundation for Innovation.

Dr. Blade was born in Alberta, Canada where he was raised on a dairy and grain farm. He holds a B.Sc. in Genetics from the University of Alberta, a M.Sc. in Plant Breeding and Crop Genetics from the University of Saskatchewan, and a Ph.D. in Cropping Systems and International Agriculture from McGill University.
