David Knight Legg, Chief Executive Officer
A proven leader in foreign investment and international trade, David brings more than 20 years’ of experience in both private and public sector organizations to his role as the inaugural CEO of the Invest Alberta Corporation. Through the course of his work at McKinsey, a global management consulting firm; Gerson Lehrman Group, a capital markets advisory and research firm; and the Commonwealth Bank of Australia; he has gained significant executive experience with various boards and commissions.
David has lived, worked, and done business in key markets for Alberta, including the United States, Europe, Asia, and Australia. He has also held numerous non-profit and advisory board positions ranging from Young Presidents Organization Pan-Asia chapter to the Sovereign Art Foundation.
Prior to joining the Invest Alberta Corporation, David’s role was Principal Advisor to the Premier of Alberta where his focus was on capital markets, investment, tax, sector diversification, Indigenous equity participation, and environmental, social and governance matters.
David did his undergraduate work at the University of Lethbridge and holds a Master’s of Public Administration from Queens University, a Master’s in Law from Oxford University, and a PhD from Yale University where he held several teaching fellowships.
Ron Hoffmann, Chief Operating Officer - Email Ron
Ron served as Alberta’s Senior Representative to the Asia Pacific Basin from 2014-2020. While in Hong Kong he was elected Vice Chairman of the Canadian Chamber of Commerce from 2016-2020. He earlier spent more than 25 years in Canada’s diplomatic service. The roles he has held include Trade Commissioner, Director General of Strategic Policy, Senior Advisor to foreign ministers, and Ambassador. Ron served in six countries, on three continents, including China, the United Kingdom, the Netherlands, South Africa, Afghanistan, and Thailand.
Dave Rodney: Senior Representative, Tourism Investment and Parks Liaison – Email Dave
During the initial development of the Invest Alberta Corporation, Dave served as Alberta’s Agent General to Houston. Prior to joining, Dave acted as President of SQ Enterprises, CEO of Tourism Canmore Kananaskis, and Senior Advisor to Alberta Counsel. As a four-term MLA, Dave served as the Associate Minister of Wellness, House Leader, and on various international committees. He has also served on Travel Alberta’s Strategic Tourism Marketing Council, and the Calgary Stampede Board. Dave earned his Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Education (AD) from the University of Saskatchewan, a Master of Education degree from Newman College, and is completing a Certified Destination Management Executive Credential.
Nick Hann, Senior Advisor for Infrastructure Investment – Email Nick
As an industry leader, Nick brings 30 years of experience in developing, structuring and investing in major infrastructure projects. Prior to joining the Invest Alberta Corporation, Nick was Head of Investments for the Canada Infrastructure Bank and served as Senior Managing Director of Macquarie Capital Markets Canada Ltd. Nick has acted as principal investor, asset manager, consortium bid director, financial advisor, debt arranger and government business advisor on projects across a wide range of sectors. Nick holds a Master of Economics and Politics degree from the University of Oxford.
Neeraj Gupta, Chief Advisor: Technology and Innovation Investments – Email Neeraj
Neeraj has more than two decades of experience in a variety of fields including technology, innovation management and intellectual property consulting, investments, emerging technologies, and product development. He has advised several provincial and federal governments in Asia and Europe on cross-border trade, investments, intellectual property, innovation, technology, and start-up ecosystems. He has authored a book on intellectual property, mentored more than 100 start-ups, and has been an angel investor. He holds Bachelor of Material Science degree from IIT (India), Master of Mathematics degree from KTH (Sweden), and PGPX from UCLA Anderson School of Management (USA) in General Management.
Josh Sawchuk, Chief Advisor: Agribusiness – Email Josh
Concurrent to his work at the IAC, Josh is the President of Manulife Farmland Services Canada (MFSC) where he has the responsibility for executing its long-term investment strategy along with managing day to day operations. Prior to MFSC, his roles included working at Burlington Capital supporting large institutional investors related to agribusiness and working at Farmer’s Edge on the growth and development of business globally, primarily focused on Eastern European countries. He also co-owns and remains active in a 5,000 acre farm operation which includes crop production and a 350 animal cow calf operation; and sits on Hancock Natural Resources Group Global Leadership Committee which overseas timber and agriculture investments.
Greg Baker, Director of Investor Services – Email Greg
Greg joins the Invest Alberta Corporations with more than 20 years of experience advancing Alberta's economic development interests abroad, including serving for nearly seven years as the Managing Director of the Government of Alberta's office in Korea. In that role, he led a team focused on promoting Alberta as a premier investment and business development destination. Working closely with major Korean industry players, he provided cross-sector export development support for Alberta industry. Greg holds a Master of Communications and Technology degree from the University of Alberta.
Andrew Fisher, Director of Corporate Affairs and Communications – Email Andrew
Andrew began his career in marketing and communications roles, where he generated awareness and revenue for non-profit, private, and public sector organizations. From there, he shifted into leading a team to deliver on international export and investment programming and policy initiatives for the Government of Alberta. Andrew holds a Master of Communications degree from Royal Roads University.
Alexandra Hryciw, Director of Executive Office – Email Alexandra
Prior to joining the Invest Alberta Corporation, Alex worked in the tech ecosystems of Edmonton and Calgary as the Director of Strategy at Innovate Edmonton and a founding member of the Alberta Innovation Corridor Partnership. She served as a Senior Advisor to Mayor Don Iveson, and has a great appreciation for policy development, city building, and history.
Steve Kwasny, Director of Partnerships and Engagement – Email Steve
Steve has extensive experience in the public, non-profit, and private sectors, with a track record of building partnerships to solve complex challenges. He brings a background in public affairs, stakeholder engagement, business and fund development, and crisis management. Most recently, Steve managed the Public Affairs Advisory practice at the largest Canadian headquartered advisory firm.
Garret Matteotti, Director of Fuels, Chemicals and Carbon Capture – Email Garret
Garret has considerable experience in the economic development sector working to attract large-scale downstream energy investments. Prior to joining Invest Alberta, Garret acted as Director, Business Development with Alberta's Industrial Heartland Association. With strong relationships throughout Alberta’s energy industry and experience working closely with international investors considering Canada, Garret is well suited to lead the fuel, chemical and carbon capture files.
Jill Perras, Director of Operations – Email Jill
Jill brings proven leadership in building organizational capacity to the Invest Alberta Corporation. Prior to joining, Jill lead operations for an energy focused private equity firm with over $3bn of assets under management. Jill also worked for an arms-length government agency in policy development and implementation. Jill holds a Master of Management and Marketing degree from the University of Aberdeen.
Katarzyna (Kasha) Piquette, Director for Financial and Business Services Investment – Email Kasha
Kasha has significant expertise in international markets and the provincial financial sector. With more than 20 years of experience, Kasha has advised international financial leaders regarding strategies to attract, secure, and retain local and global investment. Her prior roles include working at the National Bank of Canada, Barclays UK, Barclays Suisse SA, Barclays Dubai, and Scotiabank. Kasha holds a Master of Economic degree from the Warsaw School of Economics and several professional designations including CFP, CIWM, FCSI and FEA.
Kimberley Van Vliet, Director of Aviation, Aerospace & Logistics
Kimberley has more than 15 years experience in the aerospace, defence and security (ADS) industry. She concurrently works at her two companies WaVv and ConvergX®, which are both focused on commercialised technology transfer across multiple industries. Kimberley is one of five Canadians on the NATO Industrial Advisory Group (NIAG), and was awarded one of the Top 20 women in Defence in Canada by Esprit de Corps Magazine. She also sits on the Alberta Aviation Council board of directors, is the Director of Communication for the Industrial Participation Association of Canada, and has been a private pilot since 2001.
Alexander Retfalvi, Senior Manager for the Energy Sector and ESG – Email Alexander
Alexander previously worked in several policy, advocacy, and stakeholder engagement roles at Alberta's Department of Energy. His work focused on advancing market access projects for crude oil and supporting policies related to electricity and sustainable energy. He also worked in roles supporting Federal members of Cabinet and Parliament. Alexander holds a degree in Social Sciences (Economics) from the University of Ottawa.
Darla Cowdell, Executive Assistant to the CEO & Office Manager, Edmonton - Email Darla
Darla brings significant experience in both the private and public sectors to the Invest Alberta Corporation. Her previous positions include working in several Minister of the Crown offices and, most recently, in the Office of the Premier of Alberta.
Erin Wabisca, CRM and Performance Coordinator – Email Erin
Erin has extensive public sector experience, having worked in the ministries of Job, Economy & Innovation and Treasury Board & Finance on projects ranging from crown corporation creation to briefing on Alberta’s International presence. She strongly values agility and creative problem solving which is integrated into all she does. Erin holds a Master of Library and Information Science degree from the University of Alberta.
John Richardson, Research and Policy Analyst – Email John
John joins the Invest Alberta Corporation after having recently studied barriers to diversification in Alberta. In his previous positions, including with the United Kingdom House of Commons and Calgary Arts Development, John gained critical research and policy skills. John holds a Master of Comparative Politics degree from the London School of Economics.
Lauren Suranko, Projects and Events Coordinator
Lauren brings more than six years of events and promotion to her role at Invest Alberta. She has experience in planning and hosting a variety of industry events and helped raise funds and awareness for non-profit organizations. She has a Diploma in Events and Promotions Management as well as a Social Media Certification from Mount Royal University.
Riley Wolever, Intern - Email Riley
Riley’s experience includes working in investment banking at Barclays in Calgary, private equity at Ulysses Management in New York City, and utilities at Fortis Alberta. He holds a Bachelor of Commerce degree from McGill University, majoring Honours in Investment Management and minoring in Classics.
