Energy

Alberta has the most deregulated market in Canada and is innovating toward a low-carbon economy.

A leading jurisdiction for renewable and cleantech energy, Alberta is harnessing its history of innovation to build a more sustainable world. The province has been recognized by the World Bank for flaring standards, and is a leader in both Carbon Capture Utilization and Storage as well as hydrogen production.

Renewable energy sources abound in Canada’s most deregulated energy market. The province’s diverse resources portfolio includes natural gas, minerals, wind, solar, geothermal and an abundance of affordable, low emission hydrogen.

Sustainability

Alberta is a world leader in Carbon Capture Utilization and Storage

Alberta is at the forefront of sustainability innovation, including carbon capture, use and storage (CCUS) and blue hydrogen production. A pioneer of CCUS, Alberta is home to some of the world’s large-scale projects. The newest, the Alberta Carbon Trunk Line, can sequester 14.6 million tonnes of CO2 per year.
Alberta’s greatest advantages in developing a competitive CCUS innovation ecosystem comes from its access to large-scale industrial processes. These operations offer collaborative opportunities for innovators to pilot technologies and for incumbents looking to expand their knowledge to invest further in subsidiaries.

Deregulated energy market

Alberta is the most deregulated electricity market in Canada

Alberta, Canada’s topography gives it a wealth of renewable energy sources. Its market-based grid and unique geography make it an ideal setting for utility-scale wind and solar projects.

Enabled by its access to these resources, Alberta’s energy sector is making great strides in moving towards a sustainable future. Expected to be at the forefront of Canada’s wind and solar capacity in 2025, the province is already Canada’s leading destination for wind and solar investments.

Thanks to its world-class renewable resources, Energy Only Market, and TIER regulation, Alberta has also secured bilateral corporate off-take agreements not found anywhere else. This favourable electricity regulatory environment and access to renewable resources provides developers with a terrific opportunity to grow in Alberta.

Hydrogen Production

Low-carbon hydrogen is a $100-billion opportunity in Alberta

The global energy system is drastically increasing its demand for hydrogen. With projections indicating at least a tenfold increase in demand in the coming decades, Alberta has positioned itself as a leader in Canada’s hydrogen economy.
Already the largest producer and consumer of hydrogen in Canada due to its strong petrochemical cluster—producing 2.4 million tonnes of hydrogen per year—Alberta is continuing to accelerate and grow supply and demand. The province recently established The Industrial Heartland Hydrogen Task Force, which led the charge to establish Canada’s first hydrogen hub in the Edmonton Metropolitan Region.
