Statement issued by Rick Christiaanse, Invest Alberta CEO
We are excited to join Dow in celebrating today’s announcement of their final investment decision for its Path2Zero project, the world’s first net-zero carbon emissions integrated ethylene cracker and derivative site in Fort Saskatchewan, Alberta.
This long-awaited decision is a huge win for Alberta and comes after many months of engagement with the company to advance the project.
With a $8.8 billion (CAD) capital investment, excluding government incentives and subsidies, this investment is expected to deliver $1 billion in economic growth per year while decarbonizing 20% of Dow’s global ethylene capacity and creating thousands of jobs.
“Dow selected the Fort Saskatchewan site for this investment as Western Canada offers highly cost-competitive natural gas relative to other regions, as well as cost-advantaged ethane, a key feedstock for ethylene production.” – Dow
Dow’s confidence in Alberta shows global investors that Alberta is the place to successfully launch large-scale, world-leading net-zero projects. It shows that Alberta is the place where the ecosystem and government agencies can make big things happen to strengthen the sector and position Alberta’s economy for long-term prosperity.
Congratulations to the government of Alberta, government of Canada, Fort Saskatchewan, as well as Invest Alberta team members who supported this project through connections to subsidies, incentives, and sector connections.
We look forward to supporting the future stages of this project in partnership with both Dow and Linde, which has been selected as its industrial gas partner for the supply of clean hydrogen and nitrogen for the site.
